The Folk of the City

Mira

Mira is sister to the Haseki Sultan Bergüzar Hatun — and is not to be confused with the Shahmeran — and, like her sister, a diviner of great power. By the testimony of Osman Hamdi Bey's decrypted journal and of The Shahmeran alike, it is Mira's very existence that keeps her sister from attaining the full, unchecked might of a diviner: the nullifying effect strengthens the nearer Mira draws, and whilst she lives the power of Haseki Sultan Bergüzar Hatun — and with it the Padishah's grand design, which leans upon that power — is held in check. Osman Hamdi Bey kept Mira alive but hidden away upon a farm near the excavation at Thymbra Farm, concealed the place of her within his journal, and blotted out even his own memory of it. The company's recurring shared dreams proved in the end to be a rebound of Mira's magic, a psychic bleeding-over from her blood-borne struggle with her sister, caught up by them when first they passed near her home. The Shahmeran pressed the company to keep Mira living — or to bring her to the city to check Bergüzar — rather than suffer another Theodora to rise. And as they set out to find her, Aziz Sefa Bey was already racing to reach and kill her before them, and fell upon them in ambush on the road near the dig.
