The stone serpent is a snake of stone that came away from a black queen chess piece. It slid along a walkway to a nearby Medusa statue and filled a keyhole-like opening set in it, tripping some mechanism thereby: the statue turned outward, two pillars came crashing down, the water began to drain away, and a staircase rose into view as the serpent knit itself into the statue.
