Medusa
The Medusa statue is a great stone figure that stood at first with its face to the wall in the cistern, bound by magic to a Black Queen Chess Piece set with a serpent. That chess-piece serpent detached itself, slithered into a keyhole upon the statue, and so completed the unlocking of it. The statue turned about to face outward; two pillars fell nearby, the water drained rapidly away, and a staircase stood revealed behind it. Then the statue spoke — "none shall free the snake demoness" — and shed its stone. The Medusa loosed arrows at range, wounding Jean-Zera; one arrow, caught in its petrifying gaze, was turned to stone in the air. The Medusa then climbed down from its platform and set upon Gizem at close quarters with sword and snake-hair; the blades missed their mark, but the hair sank its bite into Gizem and delivered a heavy dose of poison.
