The New Sekban

The New Sekban is Alemdar's movement — a placeholder name, the faction proper being unnamed — operating within the Undercity, and marked by a modernised military structure that recalls the Sekban. Its headquarters is a compound of open-air and enclosed rooms, strategy-chambers and a training yard among them. The faction is known for the breadth of its recruitment, its cafeteria peopled with non-human uniformed recruits. Alemdar Mustafa Pasha, the bandaged leader reputedly the dead Sekban commander, oversees the faction and takes part in strategic discussions upon unity among the several groups, the Janissaries included.

Alemdar has foreknowledge of arrivals, and has praised the labour of bridging the worlds above and below. He has asked for help in negotiating terms with Ahra 'the Wolf' of the Janissaries to form a united front, pressing the need for cooperation among all who dwell within the Empire. Alemdar has invited referrals of recruits, and of any skilled in the elements or in alchemy, to join the "new Sekban Army." He has counselled the keeping-up of an appearance of continued enmity between the Janissaries and the New Sekban, the better to mislead others.

The faction's library is given over to military works of divers nations. Alemdar has voiced an interest in learning the reasons behind the departure of a former colleague, Alexander, who quit their ranks to serve under Ahra. The New Sekban is tactical and cool of temper, Alemdar betraying a readiness for bloodshed as he discourses upon the political climate and the need for strategic alliances.

Of late the New Sekban has widened its influence beyond military matters, having ties to the singer Cori, who is affiliated with the faction. This connexion has drawn the faction into the world of Hippodrome racing, where they have begun to gather the tips and insights that might further raise their standing within the Undercity.
