Yasmin is a married woman of a taciturn cast, given to talk with her neighbours of local doings and gossip. She invited Gizem to the Spectral Hippodrome at the Theodosius Obelisk, remarking that though the horses are not real the entertainment holds up well enough; and she fixed a place of meeting for the occasion, showing herself well acquainted with the ground about the Hagia Sophia.
With her husband, Yusuf, Yasmin converses through gesture and the play of the face, which bespeaks a close attachment. She keeps herself busy in the affairs of the neighbourhood and is not without knowledge of the underground diversions, as her invitation to the races attests, a spectacle that draws a mixed crowd. Of the Undercity proper, however — its politics and its workings — she knows but little.
Of late Yasmin has become a social acquaintance of Jean-Zera Mongé, whom she accompanied to the spectral Hippodrome chariot races. There she laid a wager of fifteen silver upon the Green Team whilst in converse with Chique Manu, a wealthy bookmaker; and there Chique Manu greeted her and Jean-Zera together, acknowledging their taste in amusements. Yasmin took care to steer the talk clear of money matters, a woman well versed in the social currents that eddy about the races.
