Grandmama carries meals and clean linen to Shehrazat, a young tiefling wasted by the blood rot. No tie of blood binds the two — hers is the office of a caretaker rather than a kinswoman — and she keeps a careful distance in the doing of it, wary of some rebound of the malady should she draw too near. Shehrazat, for her part, allows that the old woman has tended her faithfully whilst never once coming close.
