Frank is a gnome of chaotic and wicked temper, quick and nimble, and a deft hand at the picking of pockets. In a scuffle in a crowded alley he made an attempt upon Jean-Zera Mongé, but drew off when he was faced down; he carries a pistol, with which he grazed Jean-Zera before retreating among the crates and tarpaulins, and a cloak he wears lends him the readier concealment.
In the fight Frank showed a bold defiance, threatening the party that had come to recover coin stolen from children. He clung to a heavy purse holding the worth of some eight-and-fifty gold, until Jean-Zera disarmed him; challenged, he levelled his pistol and demanded to be told what course the other meant to take. For all his bluster he was overmatched, and Jean-Zera took the bag from him at the last — Frank playing, throughout, the part of a chaotic adversary in the wider quarrel between the party and the several bands of footpads.
