Nazif's Perfumery is a shop in the Grand Bazaar — a place of rich aromas and muted musk, its shelves ranked with vials and jars of scent — and, behind its trade, one of the guarded doors down into the Undercity: past a thick wooden door lie well-lit stone stairs, and at their foot a spacious carpeted hall of stone that opens in its turn upon the bustling Undercity and its people, tieflings and half-orcs and half-elves amongst them.
In earlier days the shop was a lively and opulent concern kept by Nazif himself, a tall man in a loose shirt who had built a prosperous trade upon a settled culture of the upsell, his shopmen pressing upon every visitor a range of perfumes from the cheap to the costly, and drawing a clientele of every sort. That was before the Festival of Candles, where Nazif was killed.
Since his murder the perfumery has grown dim and subdued, and answers now to a cat named Sharif the Strong Fur — who wears a fez and carries a small sword, and keeps his court in one dark corner amid the several cats that watch the room from this vantage and that. He oversees its business in exchange for coin or a password, and has laid down a rule against all magic against the volatile times that have followed the festival; he has claimed the place for his own authority, and asked besides for aid on behalf of four cats gravely ill. Sharif let it be known that Nazif had been relieved of his Undercity duties by the Ghost of March, and maintained that every cat reports to him, citing a folk-tale of the town in which the cats overcame the monkeys of Istanbul; he has set his patrons, too, to drawing intelligence from a faceless ghost associated with the races. Men come here seeking word of powerful items, and some do not always return — all of which marks the perfumery for a critical door into the Undercity amidst the shifting powers that followed Nazif's death.
