The Catacombs are a reach of underground tunnels and chambers, not to be confounded with the other catacombs of the region. They are known as a place where men have vanished, the Janissaries amongst them; the structure is dark and labyrinthine, threaded with hidden passages and chambers through which a man finds his way only with difficulty.
Of late a Janissary lieutenant reported that a recruit named Alexander had gone down into these catacombs some two days prior and had not returned. The place carries an ill name for its dangers and for the mystery that hangs about those who enter it, which argues that the catacombs may harbour threats, or secrets, perilous to any who would explore them.
